Hundreds photographers, from any corner of the world, have sent pictures of the world inhabitants- particularly those who witness any sort of injustice- participating in the ACAF (Catania Association for Photography Lovers) contest, which was sponsored by Italian Republic Senate.
Their pictures tell about tragic vicissitudes and gross injustice, they record proof of economic, political and existential inequalities, which unsettle people’s lives and development.
ACAF men and women know these realities which are imbued with pain and despair, therefore, using their cameras they have fought for human rights, against any difference, distinction and division.
They are people who are used to and trained to use pictures as narration and denunciation tool. Hence, in order to analyse the huge number of witnesses achieved this year, once more, they have proved that human dignity is oppressed everywhere, we need to put more efforts to achieve human rights respe
Consequently, the organizers of this event preferred to collect those pictures that were able to show and identify places and times where human dignity needs to be recognized, before being respected.
For this reason the following pictures are nominated to be awarded:
According to Art. 23: “Everyone has the right to work, to free choice of employment, to just and favourable conditions of work and to protection against unemployment. Everyone, without any discrimination, has the right to equal pay for equal work.”.
"The photographer captures the action of the elder child in front of a grey brick-wall- a wall which is symbolic itself, in addition to that, the bricks symbolize the children’s endeavour to build it.
The artist identify the exploitation of child labour capturing the action of support towards a younger child.
The absolute cleanness during the shooting, the balance of the visual composition, by renouncing any emphasis, guarantee the ability to identify and communicate the focal point of any authentic need".
Artt. 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and the following, but particularly art. 6, states “You have the right to a fair and public trial or hearing if: you are charged with a criminal offence and have to go to court”.
"The photographer focuses on prisons, marking the lack of respect towards human rights, and most of the times their violation.
The characters in the picture are along a corridor; there’s blood on the floor; the protagonists stare at us causing distress in our conscience.
Using a simple image, the photographer reminds us how easy it is to transform a right in an arbitrary action of cruelty, when the system is coercive and illiberal.
The use of cold colours is appropriate to make the atmosphere ambiguous".
Art . 26: “Everyone has the right to education. Education shall be free, at least in the elementary and fundamental stages. ... Education shall be directed to the full development of the human personality…”
"The photographer emphasizes the pleasure of a responsible study, achieved and shared in spite of physical difficulties and evident disabilities. She expresses this consideration focusing on the smiles of the protagonists and their behavior.
Moreover, she identifies in their actions moments of grace and musicality.
Her view is kindly interested. She is surprised to see that aspiration and right to learn, which doesn’t have limits and for this reason it must be respected and honoured".
